BRIDGES

In our class we have been learning about bridges.  The four bridges that we have learned about are the suspension, cable, beam and arch bridges.
The suspension bridge is a bridge that holds a lot of weight.  It has a lot of strong wires.  Kylee explains the "overhead cable on the suspension bridge holds the other straight cables for the weight." The Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous suspension bridge and it is located in San-Francisco California.
The cable bridge is like the suspension bridge but the cable is attached to the posts.  Nyah states "the poles and the cables make a triangle together."  Peridon says, "triangles are the strongest shape, they help keep the bridge together."
The arch bridge "has holes to let boats pass through it," states Dakota.  Shae explains that arch bridges "are often made of bricks." Callan shared, "the holes in the bridge are called arches."  Sameer believes that "the arch bridge is one of the strongest bridges because it has no cables to hold it up."
The beam bridge is often used for trains to cross.  It is the sturdiest bridge.
Seamus states, "that in Winnipeg we have arch bridges and beam bridges."
Throughout our learning, we created our own videos.  We took clips from Discover education and we took out the audio.  After wrote our own scripts and recorded them on to the video.  Mme Badger showed us how to green screen ourselves into our videos.  It was an incredible experience for our class.  Stay tuned for our videos to be posted.

Here are some pictures of us working on our videos with our partners

We built our very own bridges.   Our bridges were made from many recyclable materials, such as cardboard, Popsicle sticks, Styrofoam and other materials such as tape, toothpicks, string, marshmallows, glue and many more.  Then we tested our bridges to see how much weight they could hold in grams.  Many of us had very different and interesting bridges.

Pictures of some of us testing the streangth of our bridges.

Next time you go over a bridge, think of all the incredible information you learned from class.

Happy New Year

It has been quite some time since our last post. Many things have happened in our incredible class.  We came back to school on January 7th.  It was a long day and we were VERY tired after our restful break.

Something very exciting happened last week in our class.  Our teacher was nominated by Chloe and her mom for the Golden Apple award from City TV's Breakfast Television.  The reason for the nomination was because of our inspiring bullying video.  The host, Drew, from Breakfast television came to our class last Wednesday and brought us pizza and pop. Not only did Drew come but he brought his amazing camera man Justin and their side kick Cara.  WE all got to be on TV and it also showed our teacher receiving the Golden Apple Award.  Then Drew, Justin and Cara all gave us their autographs.  It was the best afternoon in our whole history of life.

In math we are learning about time.  Last week we learned about the difference in time short and longer then recess.  We discussed activities that would relate to these times.  Callan stated that having a snack lasts shorter then morning recess and Chloe stated that reading a book lasts longer then morning recess.

Today we timed ourselves by clapping.  We had to estimate the number of claps it would take us to do various activities such as touching the four walls in our classroom, stretching to the ceiling and to the floor, walking all the way to Mme Towells room, doing 20 jumping jacks and writing both our first and last names.

WHAT THE STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR LEARNING....
Cayden learned that it is important to know about time.
Nyah: "This activity showed us how different activites take different times."
Peridon: "When you clap it shows you every second."
Amber: "It only takes like 10 seconds to tie a shoe."
Kylee: "It took a short amount of time to walk to Mme Towells room."
Robyn: "The jumping jacks took me 20 seconds to do."
Maia: "It only takes one second to reach to the ceiling and then down to the floor."

It is also our I LOVE TO READ Month at school and we are going to be reading a lot of amazing books during the next month both in French and English.

We would love to invite parents or grandparents to come and read their favorite picture book to our INCREDIBLE GRADE 3 class .

New experiences happening in our class.

Last week we had student-led conferences and they were a lot of fun. We welcomed our parents in to our incredible class. Our parents were so proud of us when we shared all of our learning.

Today, we went to the Western Canadian Aviation Museum. We learned about many fascinating facts about different planes. Did you know that bush planes had wooden wings and a metal frame for the body and then clothe was wrapped around the body of the plane. These planes could land in crazy places like on the side of a mountain
Cargo planes can carry heavy and enormous objects to different places and areas. There are special kinds of cargo planes like the Hercules.

We saw a fighter jet and it looked very interesting to fly and it could do lots of fast tricks. The coolest thing is that it had Sameer's countries flag on the side of the tail. The plane was also able to shoot weapons which damaged the inside of the plane.
There was even an old Air Canada Passenger plane.  We got to board the plane and there was even a kitchen were they used to make real food like steak!  YUMMY!!!! Tyah explained that the smell of the inside of the plane was gross and Robyn stated that it smelt old....like a skunk.
Lastly, we got to have some special time with Chris Without the Hat.  We wrote different variations of O'Canada using words that were very Canadian.   We also created an identity story about Mikey who helped people in his community.

In math, we have been learning about different shapes and we created snow flakes with the shapes that we learned.  Then we had to describe and count all the different shapes that we used in our snowflake.  Enjoy the pictures of the snowflakes.

What students have to say about their learning
Nyah: "I learned that certain planes are made out of wood."
Sameer: "I learned how cool planes can be!"
Meaghan: "I learned that planes can be super cool."
Vu: "I learned about the Fighter jet and the fire shells."
Dakota: "I learned that that some of the planes were original planes.  I also learned that cargo planes opened from the front and if you are out side and you can't get in you use special doors, because you can not open doors to drop a package that is heavy so you have to use the entrance that you come in."
Shaelee: "I learned that bush planes can land on all different surfaces."
Amber: "I learned that it is hard to stop cargo planes because they are so big. When they want to drop something they put it in a parachute.  The museum was super cool and awesome."
Chloe:
"I learned that canoe planes have a big giant camera in them."
Seamus: "There are special cargo planes that can open from the front and the back."
Robyn: "I learned that Elf took different sorts of pictures on the plane to make maps."
Kylee: "It was really cool to go on the Air Canada plane.  I also learned when our parents were little they did not have any lids to go on the overhead bins."  Nyah: "The museum was very fascinating."
Cayden:  "My dad flies helicopters."

WE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOYED READING ABOUT OUR INCREDIBLE DAY!
